About the CDH
The Center for the Study of Cultural Diversity in Healthcare (CDH) was established in 2000 as an administrative division of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH).
Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Cultural Diversity, Gloria Johnson-Powell, MD, the CDH brings together experts from the UW campus and beyond to promote culturally sensitive, multidisciplinary activities incorporating biomedical, public health, behavioral and social science perspectives.
The CDH serves as a resource for the SMPH in creating an environment supportive of diverse faculty, staff, and students. We are committed to: - Developing culturally competent research, education, and training programs;
- Identifying pathways to eliminate health disparities among minority and vulnerable populations; and
- Adopting interdisciplinary approaches to improving health outcomes through the formation of strategic partnerships among academia, government, and communities located in Wisconsin and beyond.
About the EXPORT Center
The CDH is home to an EXPORT (Excellence in Partnerships for Community Outreach and Research on Disparities in Health and Training) Center. There are more than 50 EXPORT Centers across the nation conducting research, education/training and community outreach initiatives focused on improving minority health and eradicating minority health disparities. These centers range in scope and mission, and reflect either a R-24 award (focused on community outreach building only), a P-20 award (to build research capacity) or a P-60 award (comprehensive center) from the NIH.
The CDH’s connection to this national network of expertise has important implications and opportunities for the School of Medicine and Public Health and the broader UW campus.
For example, are you looking for an institutional partner to work with on a health disparities-related project but haven’t located local expertise? Might you wish to learn from colleagues here and across the nation about successful community outreach programs with African American, Hispanic, Southeast Asian and/or Native American communities? Would you like to inquire of fellow faculty instructors to enhance your own course curricula or training program?
The CDH EXPORT Center can facilitate these inquiries, connecting you with colleagues who share in your minority health/health disparity interests, and who are likely similarly interested to learn about research, education and outreach initiatives occurring here at the UW.

About the NCMHD
Our EXPORT center is supported by the National Institutes of Health’s National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities.
The NIH Strategic Research Plan and Budget to Reduce and Ultimately Eliminate Health Disparities (Volume I; Fiscal Years 2002-2006) represents a first step in implementing Public Law (P.L.) 106-525, The Minority Health and Health Disparities Research and Education Act of 2000. It also represents NIH's assurance and commitment to this effort.
The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) at the NIH serves as the focal point for planning and coordinating minority health and other health disparities research across the NIH.
Specific priorities of the NCMHD include developing an integrated, cross-disciplinary national research agenda on health disparities and promoting and supporting research capacity building activities in the minority and medically underserved.
