Research
Approaches and Goals
The School of Medicine and Public Health has the largest research commitment of any school or college on the UW-Madison campus, receiving more than $240 million in research support in fiscal 2004. Approximately 1,200 faculty members work in 26 departments and 18 centers and institutes, and have active research programs covering virtually every aspect of basic or clinical biomedical research.
A primary goal of the CDH is to establish itself as the campus clearinghouse for faculty, staff and students interested in maintaining, enhancing and/or initiating translational research projects targeting minority health or disparities in health and health outcomes. A secondary goal is to establish a model for research that crosses disciplinary and cultural boundaries, thereby introducing an integrative, culturally sensitive approach to the study of health disparities.
The CDH believes that successful and sustainable translational research targeting health disparities requires community-academic partnerships. These partnerships recognize, value, and rely upon community knowledge and expertise to frame research questions, identify methodologies and methods, design studies, collect and analyze data, and disseminate findings.
