The Importance of Translational Research

The CDH benefits greatly from the extensive portfolio of funded research on the UW campus that directly relates to minority health and health disparities in Wisconsin. However, we also know that to improve human health and wellness, scientific discoveries must be translated into practical applications.

According to the National Institutes of Health:

“Scientific discoveries typically begin at ‘the bench’ with basic research—in which scientists study disease at a molecular or cellular level. These findings then progress to the clinical level, or the patient's ‘bedside.’

Scientists are increasingly aware that this bench-to-bedside approach to translational research is really a two-way street. Basic scientists provide clinicians with new tools for use in patients and for assessment of their impact, and clinical researchers make novel observations about the nature and progression of disease that often stimulate basic investigations.

Translational research has proven to be a powerful process that drives the clinical research engine. However, a stronger research infrastructure could strengthen and accelerate this critical part of the clinical research enterprise.”

Translational research efforts within the CDH are underway and new opportunities are being identified rapidly.

CDH is dedicated to not just successfully participating in translational research activities, but also documenting and disseminating best practices for successful, sustainable translational research programs.

Furthermore, we are a part of a large national network of expertise in minority health research, education/training and community outreach. Our EXPORT (Excellence in Partnerships for Community Outreach and Research on Disparities in Health and Training) Center connects minority health investigators at UW with colleagues around the nation.
